Brown asks for examples of bullying
By CHARLES S. JOHNSON Missoulian State Bureau

HELENA - In a new campaign TV ad Thursday, Republican gubernatorial candidate Roy Brown asks Montanans to send any examples of being “bullied' by Gov. Brian Schweitzer to a new Web site.

“Bullied by Brian Schweitzer?” the ad says. “Fight back. Visit BriantheBully.com and confidentially report it. It's time to send the bully packing.”

The new 30-second spot, called “No More,” repeats the theme of Brown's first TV ad - which accused Schweitzer of being a bully. It reiterates comments from Schweitzer's much-criticized July speech in Philadelphia, where he suggested that he helped tamper with the November 2006 U.S. Senate election in Montana.

“Schweitzer bragged he bullied election monitors, bullied a woman until she was as ‘nervous as a pregnant nun,' ” the ad says.

The governor has since apologized for the Philadelphia speech and said he was “just joking around.” He has said he intends to leave the jokes to the last-night TV comedians.

“And,” the ad continues, “when he was caught misusing tax dollars, Schweitzer bullied the investigator, before being found guilty of violating ethics laws.”

That refers to the state Republican Party's complaint that Schweitzer illegally used state workers to help make a public service announcement for radio after he filed for re-election, a violation of state law.

While the case was under investigation, one of the governor's senior staff members called Political Practices Commissioner Dennis Unsworth in what Republicans have called an improper attempt to influence the decision.

Unsworth's hearings officer, a University of Montana law professor, has since recommended that Schweitzer be found guilty of the ethics complaint, but Unsworth has not issued a ruling yet. Schweitzer has sent a $750 payment for a fine, despite the lack of a ruling.

The Web site cites news stories about these cases and one from the 2007 Legislature in which a Democratic legislator, Sen. Jesse Laslovich of Anaconda, called Schweitzer a bully.

In response, Schweitzer campaign manager Harper Lawson took after Brown.

“Roy Brown must be afraid to tell Montana voters who he is or what he stands for,” Lawson said. “Why else would he launch yet another false negative attack ad that doesn't even mention Brown's name or explain what he believes in?”

" If Roy is a wimp then Schweitzer is a bully. Simple logic. Roy knows he is a wimp with no real campaign. "

" Um, I am glad they outted this Schweitzer for what he is. Like any abuser, he breaks laws, threatens others and is basically a thorn in everyones side. This sort of behavior is too common and bullies get away with it so much. Please, do something with this man. He needs to pay for the harm he has done.

" I don't personally know about Schweitzer but there are a lot of bullies out there that need to be stopped. Legislation in the form of anti-bullying and harassment by these individuals might cause some of them to think twice before belittling someone else to make themselves feel better. I certainly would be interested in pursuing such legislation. It has been tried before but did not pass. Go figure. "

" Brown is so devoid of actual ideas or suggestions that his only platform is negative. He's no better than he claims Schweitzer is, I haven't even seen negative ads going in the other direction. "
