FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Smith, Blue Devils scorch No. 2 Broncs
By the Missoulian

FRENCHTOWN - With a dominating performance up front and strong running from Matt Smith, the Corvallis football team pulled a shocker Friday.

Smith piled up 183 yards rushing on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns in a 28-7 win over No. 2-ranked Frenchtown in Southwestern A action. It was the first loss of the season for the Broncs (2-1 conference, 5-1 overall).

“They took it to us and really wanted it more,” Frenchtown coach Steve Pinsoneault said. “They ran power outside and we had no containment whatsoever.

“I think we listened to a lot of what people were saying about us and it showed. We got a little complacent. But they beat us on the line of scrimmage and Smith ran hard.”

Smith scored on 65- and 26-yard scampers in the second period and Corvallis held a 14-0 halftime lead. The senior running back struck again in the third period on a 3-yard burst and Frenchtown never recovered.

In addition to Smith, Pinsoneault credited Stevensville transfer Drew Zeiler with a strong game at quarterback for Corvallis. The Broncs were led by Cody Kirk with 117 yards rushing on 20 attempts.

At 3-0 in league and 6-1 overall, Corvallis took over sole possession of first place with home games against Hamilton and Dillon left on the schedule.
