Great Falls Russell's Johnson wins No. 300
By the Associated Press

BOZEMAN - C.M. Russell football coach Jack Johnson has won his 300th game in 36 seasons at the Great Falls school.

The C.M. Russell special teams blocked a pair of punts that led to third-quarter touchdowns in the 28-14 win over Bozeman Friday night. Johnson's record at CMR is now 300-89.

The Rustlers (6-1) celebrated at midfield after the game, then in unison chanted, “Three Hundred.”

Johnson downplayed the personal accomplishment.

“It was a good win for the kids,” he said. “Hopefully we can still get a home playoff game. We'd like to keep that thing rolling for us.”

Gary Lowry, a former player and longtime assistant coach for Johnson, said his old head coach deserves the credit.

“He always mentions all the good kids and coaches we've had,” Lowry said. “But he does it. He's the guy.”

Ben Snipes, who played on CMR's offensive line during the 1999 and 2000 seasons said coach Johnson is a “superb motivator and instills a heightened level of pride in his players and his program.”

Johnson's teams have won 12 state championships, the most recent in 2004.

“I decided when I was a sophomore in high school that I was going to coach football and that's all I've ever wanted to do,” said Johnson, 64. “I've always had a passion for it. My philosophy on it is if you want to have a happy, fulfilling career, find a job you'd do for nothing and then convince somebody to pay you a little bit for it.”

Johnson's career coaching record is 322-96-1, including two years as a coach in Michigan and one in Wyoming.
