Get carded at the public library
By JOYCE DOYLE for the Missoulian

Missoula Public Library signed up 750 new card-holders in September, a 10 percent increase over last year. Now we have a total of 66,465 users.

So now that you have a card - use it. We have new release DVDs, the latest music, magazines, and even manga. Plus, we're in the final stages of our redesign project. We started with quiet study rooms, then we created a young adult room for teens ages 13-18, and we moved our videos and audios to one location for easy browsing and dubbed it Entertainment Central.

We now have a readers' advisory corner and comfy seating, and we're altering our reference area. Our final step will be a new accounts desk and returns area, helping us get those great books and movies back onto the shelves faster, and soon self-checkout will cut down on those lines created by an average of 60,000 monthly checkouts. Plus, our staff will have more time to be out on the floor and ready to help you find what you're looking for.

All that is waiting for you at the library. So what are you waiting for?

We have it: Staff reviews

"Stardust," by Neil Gaiman. Spike, 1999, find it at: Y Gaiman

"Stardust" is a quiet story. It's the kind of tale close friends might weave around a campfire on a long, star-filled summer night. Residing in a genre populated by more active, dramatically dazzling tales, it refuses to be part of that genre - and that might take some getting used to. Tristan Thorn lives in Wall, a medieval-like town on the guarded border of the mundane world and the world of Faerie. At 17, in a fit of infatuation, he swears to his ladylove that he will bring her a just-fallen star if she will marry him. Assuming he'll fail, she agrees, and Tristan sets out on a magical journey into Faerie. He has many adventures and a little drama, caused by some evil beings also searching for the star, but it all seems soft, gauzy, sleepy. Tristan's finding and journeying with the star (and their resolution) is the most intriguing part of the story-quietly surprising. If you like your fantasy light, wispy, and sweet, this book might hold you in its spell.
