But No. 16 Weber State managed to wobble across the finish line Saturday with a couple of bullet holes in each foot, holding on for a 17-10 victory over Northern Colorado in Ogden, Utah.
The Wildcats, now 4-0 in the Big Sky Conference, 6-2 overall, won despite three fumbles and an interception.
But WSU kept dropping the ball, including once by quarterback Cameron Higgins as he was diving across the goal line.
Wildcats coach Ron McBride chose to focus on the positives.
“The defense was awesome,” McBride told the Ogden Standard Examiner. “When you've got those kinds of numbers it should be a slaughter.”
Northern Colorado, which hosts Montana on Saturday at 12:05 p.m. in Greeley, Colo., scored its first touchdown with 2:26 left in the game on a pass from Bryan Waggener to Jason Caprioli to pull within 17-10.
Weber State recovered the onside kick, however, and was able to run out the clock.
UNC coach Scott Downing said the Bears could have played much better.
“I don't think that we, as a team either offensively or defensively, played our best game of the year,” he told the Greeley Tribune. “I give our kids credit for hanging in there because we had an opportunity with two minutes left in the game to get an onside kick or stop them.”
Northern Colorado is now 1-2 in league, 1-5 overall. Four of the Bears' losses have come by seven points or less.
Weber State travels to 15th-ranked Northern Arizona in a battle of Big Sky unbeatens Saturday. The Wildcats' 4-0 start in league play is just the third in school history. The last two times that happened - in 1987 and 1991 - WSU eventually received at-large berths to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
Montana remained ranked No. 8 in the Sports Network's poll released on Monday. Northern Arizona and Weber State each jumped two spots to Nos. 15 and 16, respectively.
