SOCCER: Hellgate boys earn spot in state tourney
By the Missoulian

The Missoula Hellgate boys cruised past Missoula Big Sky 7-0 Wednesday in a Western AA playoff game to earn a trip to the state Class AA soccer tournament next week in Great Falls.

Juniors Lucas Matelich and Ian Hamilton scored two goals apiece to pace the Knights, who at 8-3-2, posted their best regular-season record ever.

Hellgate will travel to state as the No. 2 seed from the Western AA.

“We started strong and stayed strong,” Hellgate coach Jay Anderson said. “The defense held and the midfield really played well.

“Everyone at state is going to be tough, so it was good to see us come out and play like this.”

The Knights dominated from the outset, scoring three goals in the first 27 minutes.

Ben Corwin, Park Harmon and Charlie Scheel also found the back of the net for Hellgate. Colin Snodgrass contributed two assists.

“Everyone's confidence is up,” Anderson said. “When we get to state we know that it's anyone's ballgame. Whoever shows up to play strong can win. They really believe they have a shot at winning this.”

Big Sky, which finished the season 0-13, wasn't able to notch a single shot on goal. Eagles' goalkeeper Lucas Wittkopp had 14 saves.
