Quickly on the heels of Chet Huntley’s Big Sky Resort, another group is planning to build a year-round resort in southwest Montana. The Big Sky Resort is near completion and backers of the Ski Yellowstone Resort hope to have their project completed by the winter of 1978. The Ski Yellowstone Project will involve 15 ski lifts on public lands near Hebgen Lake. Plans also call for two villages that would include condominiums, a hotel and restaurants. A marina located on Hebgen Lake is to accommodate summer recreation, the marina would include some 50 boat slips as well as a restaurant. Ski Yellowstone has filed papers with the U.S. Forest Service in applying for the construction of the ski lifts. Ski Yellowstone owns 93,0000 acres stretching from Mount Hebgen to Hebgen Lake. Ski Yellowstone’s land is adjacent to Montana’s border with Wyoming and Idaho.
Ski Yellowstone seemed headed for a successful development, but opposition from environmental groups as well as changing economic climate would spell doom for the project. The legal battle as well as the administrative fight would go on into the early 1980s and would impact potential developments across the state.

“To buckle up or not to buckle, that is the question.” Montanans will be faced with the question of whether or not to repeal the current state seat belt law. The current seat belt law was passed by the Legislature in 1985 requiring Montana motorists to be buckled up or face fines. Drivers also are responsible for all passengers to be buckle up. Opponents of the seat belt law called it “invasive.” Many backers of the repeal initiative cite studies that say seat belts can actually increase the chances of injuries if they are not properly installed or secured. Proponents of the seat belt law say it has saved lives over the past three years and seat belt installation and maintenance is to such a point that it doesn’t vary significantly.
The repeal effort failed and the 1989 Legislature went even further this time tightening the requirements for child safety seats.
