HELENA - Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana has been awarded the contract for a state-subsidized insurance pool.

Insure Montana board member Jim Edwards says businesses insuring their employees through the Insure Montana program will see a minimal rate increase in 2009. The 2008 BCBS contract included a 12.6 percent increase and a decrease in benefits.

State Auditor and Insurance Commissioner John Morrison says the new Blue Cross proposal will allow Insure Montana to recover premiums paid that exceed claims costs and operating expenses. Morrison says Blue Cross also agreed to substantially reduce its administrative costs.

The Insure Montana pool subsidizes health insurance for 731 businesses covering 2,000 employees and another 1,900 family members. It is funded through the tobacco tax.

Blue Cross and New West Health Care bid on the contract.
