But still not good enough to beat ninth-ranked Weber State in Ogden, Utah.
PSU tried the quadruple quarterback attack against the Wildcats on Saturday as Weber built up a 31-0 lead early in the third quarter.
“We can learn from (this game) and we need to be upbeat and positive heading into next week,” Wildcats quarterback Cameron Higgins told the Ogden Standard-Examiner. “We could have put the game out of reach in the third quarter but a mistake here and there cost us.”
Portland State, which hosts Montana at 2 p.m. Saturday, out-gained Weber 455 to 405. QB Drew Hubel got the bulk of the work, completing 17 of 35 passes for 208 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. But the Vikings also gave Tygue Howland, Jimmy Collins and Conor Kavanaugh snaps behind center.
“Every time I look up there was another dude in there (at quarterback),” Weber State coach Ron McBride said.
Despite the loss, Portland State coach Jerry Glanville was pleased with how his team finished the game.
“I asked them in the locker room, ‘Did you see anyone that quit? If you did give me their name and we'll leave his (rear) here,' ” Glanville told the Oregonian. “I didn't get any names.”
The Vikings are now 2-3 in the Big Sky Conference, 3-5 overall.
Weber State (6-0, 8-2) would clinch a share of the Big Sky title and the league's automatic playoff berth with a victory at winless Idaho State on Saturday.
“The bottom line is we're 6-0 in the league, which is unheard of in this program and we have the opportunity to do some really great things here,” McBride said. “But we have to make sure we take care of business next week.”
- Montana moved up a spot to No. 5 in the Sports Networks' Top 25 poll released Monday. Weber State moved up four spots to No. 9, while Northern Arizona dropped from No. 19 to No. 23.
