VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Bengals claim regular-season title
By the Missoulian

HELENA - It's official. The Helena High volleyball team is the Western AA regular season champ after beating Missoula Sentinel in four games on Thursday.

The Bengals, behind a big night by outside hitter Kelsey Williams, earned a 25-16, 14-25, 25-13, 26-24 win in their second meeting with the Spartans.

Williams had 27 kills and 12 digs as Helena improved to 10-1 in league play, 17-4 overall. The Bengals also tallied 16 blocks in the win, led by Monica Grimsrud's six.

Grimsrud also had 13 kills for Helena, which jumped out to a big lead on Sentinel, which was tied with the Bengals for first in the West coming in.

“They reeled off like 10 straight points before we even got going,” said Spartans coach Patrick Hiller. “We fell way back, but the exact same thing happened to them in the second game.”

A discrepancy between the scorebooks stalled things for 15 minutes in the third game, said Hiller, and Sentinel was unable to recover, though it led most of the fourth game.

Senior middle hitter Jen Keddy finished with 28 kills, five blocks and three aces for the Spartans (9-2, 16-5). Also, Krista O'Neil had 17 digs and Hope Nelson had 14.

“It's encouraging because we didn't play real well,” Hiller said, “but Helena played a nice game of power volleyball. We were fortunate to be in to be honest with you. When it's all said and done we should have won. But I was impressed with Helena.”

Both teams have one conference match remaining in the regular season, but no one can move ahead of the Bengals in the Western AA standings.
