VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Bigfork exacts revenge on Polson
By the Missoulian

BIGFORK - The Bigfork volleyball team avenged its loss to Polson nearly a month ago with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-16 sweep of the Pirates on Thursday in the final Northwestern A regular season match for both teams.

The Vals clinched the second seed in the conference tournament with the win. They improved to 8-2 in league play and 10-2 overall. Polson swept the first meeting at home in the second week of October.

“We're going to have to go through them again if we want to make it to the state tournament too,” Bigfork coach Yvonne Peck said. “Tonight was a hard fought match with a lot of good defensive plays.”

With a win, Polson would have moved into a tie with Bigfork for the league lead and it would have held the tiebreaker with a season-sweep of the Vals. The Pirates instead stayed in third place and dropped to 6-4 in league play, 9-4 overall.

Roxy Thurman led the attack for the Vals, posting 10 kills, while Rachael Luckow and Claire Wilken split the setting duties, combining for all 27 of Bigfork's assists. Luckow finished with 14, while Wilken dished out 13.

The Vals also picked up nine aces in the match, while Polson served three.

“I think the service line was a big difference,” Peck said. “We were a little bit more effective and forced them into some errant hits they couldn't set.”

Mallery Knoll had three of the Vals' aces to go with a match-high 18 digs.

Breanne Kelley led Polson with 14 kills and Nicole Davey chipped in 17 digs.
