Teens ages 13-18 can join our Young Adult Advisory Council that meets once a month to help organize teen events, give input into decorations for the our new room, and recommend book, movie and music purchases. You can plan a teen party, start up a book or movie critique group, form a video or photography club, organize a homework center for kids - or bring your own ideas.
YAAC is a fun way to collect required community volunteering hours, and looks great on a college application or resume. Teens can also find some great volunteer activities in our children’s and young adult departments from helping with children’s programs to preparing story time materials, shelving books, and special projects like creating displays.

“A Guide to the Birds of East Africa,” by Nicholas Drayson. Houghton Mifflin, 2008, find it at: DRAYSON
Meet Mr. Malik, a widower, Rose Mbikwa, the leader of the weekly bird walks, and Harry Kahn, the wealthy jokester, in this gentle read about life and love in Nairobi, Kenya.
Following his doctor’s advice to find a hobby and reduce stress, Mr. Malik takes up bird watching. Every Tuesday morning for the last three years he and others gather at the Nairobi Museum for the weekly bird walk under the leadership of Rose Mbikwa, the woman Mr. Malik loves from afar. Enter Harry Kahn, the bane of Mr. Malik’s school years and who is now on a vacation in Kenya. Kahn joins the bird walk one morning and is also smitten with Rose.
Captivating character sketches draw you into this story that is more than a competition for the hand of a lady. You see the darker sides of life in Kenya, corruption and crime, the devastation of AIDS, and the haunting poverty.
Altogether a delightful read that shows bird watching can lead us to explore the rich and bountiful world around us.
