The University of Montana’s spectrUM Discovery Area will partner with Overwatch Geospatial Systems to provide a field trip for area students on GIS Day, Wednesday, Nov. 19.
The event n “GIS in Your Everyday Life” n is held in conjunction with the San Francisco Exploratorium exhibition “Weather,” which is at the UM discovery area through January 2009, and the Weather Bus, which runs every Wednesday and is hosted by a spectrUM educator and a KECI meteorologist.
“This is our first GIS Day activity, and spectrUM is a great partner for us,” said Marilyn Lee, marketing specialist for Overwatch Geospatial’s Visual Learning Systems operations. “They provide such a valuable service to the surrounding schools, and to take part in that for a day is very exciting.”
Teachers whose classrooms will participate in the GIS Day field trip will be given packets to aid in the incorporation of GIS in the classroom. The GIS Day activity also will be available for spectrUM visitors during public hours.
“Textron is a leader in the GIS technology field,” said Holly Truitt, co-director of spectrUM Discovery Area. “We are excited to have this opportunity to collaborate with them in sharing the everyday applications of GIS with Missoula schoolchildren and the exciting career opportunities in the field.”
