The event - “GIS in Your Everyday Life” - is held in conjunction with the San Francisco Exploratorium exhibition “Weather,” which is at the UM discovery area through January 2009, and the Weather Bus, which runs every Wednesday and is hosted by a spectrUM educator and a KECI meteorologist.
During the Nov. 19 field trip, more than 120 C.S. Porter Middle School students will learn about geocaching with the UM geography department and take part in a hands-on activity proved by Overwatch, an operating unit of Textron Systems, a Textron Inc. company.
Teachers whose classrooms will participate in the GIS Day field trip will be given packets to aid in the incorporation of GIS in the classroom. The GIS Day activity also will be available for spectrUM visitors during public hours.
“Textron is a leader in the GIS technology field,” said Holly Truitt, co-director of spectrUM Discovery Area. “We are excited to have this opportunity to collaborate with them in sharing the everyday applications of GIS with Missoula schoolchildren and the exciting career opportunities in the field.”

UM's spectrUM Discovery Area is located on the first floor of the Skaggs Building addition and is part of the College of Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences. Public hours are Thursdays from 3:30 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $3.50 per person. Children age 3 and younger are free.
