Cats carry head of steam into Missoula
By JOHN SMITHERS of the Missoulian

Montana State spent Saturday making things interesting in Bozeman.

Not with Portland State, which the Bobcats pummeled 49-32, but for this weekend's matchup with No. 5 Montana.

While the 10-1 Grizzlies were stumbling around in a 29-10 victory over winless Idaho State, MSU was playing perhaps its best all-around game of the season.

The Bobcats, now 5-2 in the Big Sky Conference, 7-4 overall, could vault themselves into the playoff picture with a win over their in-state rival.

“We got to get it done one more week against the Griz,” Montana State running back Demetrius Crawford told the Bozeman Chronicle.

If the Cats are going to get it done against UM, it likely will be with Crawford, who danced all over the Vikings (2-5, 3-7) for a career-high 187 yards and two touchdowns.

The senior, who has almost single-handedly carried the MSU offense this season, credited the big boys in front for his highlight-reel afternoon.

“My offensive line helped me get to the second level all day. Once I was there I just put moves on them,” Crawford said.

The Bobcats finished with 369 yards on the ground, as three different backs had 50 yards or more.

Third-string quarterback Mark Desin didn't exactly light up the scoreboard with 120 yards passing and two interceptions. But the redshirt sophomore from Billings, who was recruited by the Grizzlies, did score on a 5-yard run in the third quarter to help the Cats extend their lead to 35-25.

“(Desin) shook off those mistakes,” MSU coach Rob Ash said. “He did a lot of things you might not notice: Checking plays, managing the game, throwing the ball out of bounds when he didn't have a play and keeping it alive when he did and making plays running the football.”

Montana State's defense played well, holding the Vikings' run-and-shoot to just 59 yards passing in the first half.

The Cats intercepted three passes. One they returned for a touchdown and another, in a bizarre turn of events, ended up being a Vikings touchdown.

MSU's Ramon Lewis picked off a desperation heave by Drew Hubel on the last play of the first half, only to be stripped of the ball in the end zone. Daniel Wolverton recovered to make it 21-17 at halftime.

- Montana remained at No. 5 in the Sports Network poll. Weber State, which was idle, stayed at No. 8.

" The CATS are back, a little wounded, but playing with a lot of fire. It was a lot of fun in Bobcat Stadium last Saturday. Should be a great game in Griz stadium.

GO CATS "

John, would you mind explaining the scenario(s) in which a team with only 6 possible D-I wins would make it into the playoffs. Thank you in advance. "
