Workers are making room for a new accounts desk and sorted return slots that will alter traffic patterns and relieve congestion. The back room is being remodeled to improve work flow and get materials to the shelves faster. But perhaps the biggest change for patrons will be the new self-checkout stations that, coupled with self-serve holds pickup, mean no more waiting in line - so a “quick stop” at the library can in fact be quick.
The project paves the way for the library to continue as a leader in technology, education and culture for all county residents. First we introduced quiet study rooms for traditional research. Then we created a children’s room entryway reflecting the imagination and creativity of our famous gnome house.
We collected all our video and audio materials - including those new release DVDs that are so popular - into Entertainment Central so they’re easy to find and browse. And we created “new” and seasonal displays, plus a Grab ’n’ Go collection of best sellers and popular titles so every library visit is a treat with something on the shelf.
The library will remain open throughout the project, so you can watch the final transformation live and in-person. Or, follow our progress virtually with photos and commentary on our blog at www.missoulapubliclibrary.org.
Be an early shopper
Get a head start and avoid those holiday crowds - pick up some gifts at the library. We sell collectible gnome house postcards with a variety of photos featuring our famous gnome house. Plus, you can select library note cards to stuff a stocking or two. Or, fill a Missoula Public Library tote bag and you won’t need wrapping paper. Library merchandise sales benefit the Friends of the Library and proceeds are used to support library programs and services.
Thanksgiving hours
The library will close at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26, and remain closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 27 and 28, for the Thanksgiving holiday. Our catalog and e-resources will remain available online at www.missoulapubliclibrary.org. Regular hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Sunday, 1-5 p.m.
We have it: Staff reviews
“Schooled,” by Gordon Korman. Hyperion Books for Children, 2007, find it at: Y KORMAN
Capricorn Anderson has never attended school. Raised on a defunct hippie commune by his grandmother, Rain, Cap was never exposed to a lot of things we take for granted like television and pizza. But when Rain breaks her hip, Cap has to stay with a foster family and is integrated into the local public school, whether he wants to or not. For Cap, the students at his new school talk too fast and only care about “things.” It’s pretty obvious he doesn’t fit in, but that may not be so bad, as students start emulating Cap from his tie-dyed clothes to practicing tai chi before school. When he runs for class president, will Cap find out he’s everybody’s role model or everybody’s joke?
Told from varying points of view, “Schooled” makes you laugh while also making you look at our social rules with whole new eyes. It’s the perfect read for the school year.
