The Griz learned Sunday evening that they'll play host to the Bobcats of the Southland Conference when the 2008 Football Championship Subdivision playoffs open Saturday.
Coach Bobby Hauck and a group of players watched the playoff selection show, aired by ESPNU, at the Press Box restaurant.
Texas State, which has its campus in San Marcos, is 8-4 after a 48-45 victory over Sam Houston State. The Bobcats are No. 22 in the latest Sports Network Poll, released Sunday afternoon.
Montana, 11-1, earned the fourth and final seed into the tournament after defeating in-state rival Montana State 35-3 Saturday, while Big Sky Conference-leading Weber State suffered a home loss to Eastern Washington. Weber State, ranked No. 12, drew a road playoff game against No. 3 Cal Poly.
The top-four seed means the Grizzlies can have a home playoff game the next week, provided they beat Texas State. But Hauck and his players are living in the moment, and this is the 16th straight season the Griz are in the playoffs, extending their own NCAA record.
“It's really quite a streak, quite a record,” said Hauck, who added, “Now that the dust has settled from the season, we have the best record in the FCS.
“It's really something. This group of seniors has done a great job. Over the last three years we're 23-1 in Big Sky play, which is phenomenal. It's exciting, and here we go, we get to play another one next weekend.”
Kickoff is at 12:05 Mountain time Saturday at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. Tickets for the game go on sale Monday at 8:30 a.m. at the Adams Center box office, and are also available on-line at griztix.com or by fax or phone.
They are $25 for the general public and $5 for UM students. Student guest tickets are $10.
Season-ticket holders have until 6 p.m. Tuesday to purchase their seats. Any season-ticket seats not purchased by then will be released for sale to the general public at griztix.com at 10 p.m. Tuesday evening, and the next morning at most GrizTix outlets.
