If you’re over 60 and income eligible, you may qualify to volunteer. While providing much needed companionship, Senior Companions assist with such things as light household tasks, errands and transportation to and from medical appointments.
In exchange for 20 hours per week of volunteer service, they receive a tax-free stipend, reimbursement for travel, liability insurance while volunteering and ongoing training from MAS. For more information about the Senior Companion program, call MAS at
Eleanore’s Project Inc., a local Missoula nonprofit organization, will have its fourth-annual fundraising event Friday, Dec. 5, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at A Carousel for Missoula. The public is invited to find out about Eleanore’s Project and the expeditions in 2008 and future ones in 2009 n providing wheelchairs, adaptive equipment and augmentative communication systems for children with disabilities in Peru and Jordan.
Monte will make a surprise visit at 5 p.m. Santa Claus will be there, along with carousel rides, treats and beverages. Share in the spirit of the season by helping to give a child a wheelchair. As always, 100 percent of donations directly benefit children in need of wheelchairs and other equipment, never for operating expenses. During the event, artwork by Larry Burton and Odette Grassi will be on display, and raffle tickets will be available to win a digital camera donated by Title Services Inc. In honor of World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, Missoula AIDS Council and the University Congregational Church are hosting a nondenominational service to remember and honor those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the University Congregational Church, 405 University Ave. At 6:45 P.M. there will be a candlelight procession to the University of Montana UC Theater for a showing of “Living with AIDS in Rural Montana,” a documentary by UM graduate student, Anne Medley.
Each year there are an estimated 56,000 new HIV infections in the United States. Most Montanans don’t know their HIV status. Commemorate World AIDS Day by getting an HIV test. Free, anonymous testing is offered at the Missoula AIDS Council office, 500 N. Higgins Ave. Suite 100, every Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additional testing will be available on World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, at the University of Montana in rooms 330 and 331 of the University Center from noon to 4 p.m.
