HELENA - Police say burglars broke into a private club here and made off with thousands of dollars worth of art, including a painting by the famed artist Charlie Russell.

Helena Police Det. Richard Drysdale said four pieces of art were stolen from the Montana Club - "The Land Before God" by Russell, valued at about $10,000, a Russell print, a Marcel Duchamp painting and a bronze sculpture entitled "The Scribe."

The detective didn't know the name of the Duchamp painting or who the sculptor was Monday evening. No one was available for comment at the club.

The burglary at the club's business center happened sometime Saturday night or early Sunday morning. An employee reported the break-in Sunday afternoon.

Three computers also were stolen, bringing the total loss to nearly $40,000.
