Showing the way - Swan Valley students use poetry to learn about, and from, birds

I read the poem below, “Something Told the Wild Geese” by Rachel Field, to my fourth-sixth-graders. They then wrote a poem that was based on this famous poem and illustrated it. I think that my students caught the essence of the poem by adding their own personalities to each poem and picture.

Something Told the Wild Geese

By Rachel Field

Something told the wild geese

It was time to go.

Though the fields lay golden

Something whispered - “Snow.”

Leaves were green and stirring,

Berries, luster-glossed,

But beneath warm feathers

Something cautioned - “Frost.”

All the sagging orchards

Steamed with amber spice,

But each wild breast stiffened

At remembered ice.

Something told the wild geese

It was time to fly -

Summer sun was on their wings,

Winter in their cry.

The Wild Ducks

They fly, they climb high.

They travel long distances.

They never rest, in a nest till

Their flight is done.

Loons Tell Us It’s Winter Time

Loons tell us it’s winter time

They say, “Oh, I sense snow!”

They flap their wings and say, “Let’s go!”

Their call makes the snow fall.

They know fall is gone.

The hummingbird flies down to

Swans

Swans have fun all day and night,

but when it comes to winter

It’s time to fly

They fly all day and night,

But when they get there,

They rest all day and night.
