Brant Light to be new chief prosecutor for state

HELENA - Cascade County Attorney Brant Light has been named the new chief prosecutor in the state Justice Department, outgoing Attorney General Mike McGrath said.

Light, who has been county attorney for 14 years, will replace John Connor as the state's chief criminal lawyer. Connor is retiring next week after more than 40 years at the Justice Department.

Montana's chief criminal lawyer is required by state law to handle certain felony prosecutions and to help train Montana's 56 county attorneys and their staffs.

"I think we're lucky to get him," McGrath said. "He has run an office that has a very large caseload," which McGrath said will be valuable in training new county attorneys.

Light says he would like to start regional training programs and generally increase the state-offered training for county prosecutors.

Attorney General-elect Steve Bullock worked with McGrath in selecting Light.

"He has some great ideas about reaching out and providing training with prosecutors in our communities," Bullock said. "I think he will be an asset to our office."

Light said he enjoys his current work, but is excited to start his new job.

"I absolutely love what I'm doing, I love my county," Light said. "But I was looking for a change, just something different. I love to teach, and I love trying cases."
