If you haven’t already heard, Missoula Public Library now offers audio books you can load to an MP3 player from our in-building station or from home. We’ve already checked out more than 350 titles since the program started in October, so join the others who are using this popular new service.
Follow the link from our home page at missoulapubliclibrary.org. Or if you’re looking for a particular title, try one easy search in our catalog and find out if the print, electronic book, traditional audio, or downloadable audio is available. Electronic books and downloadable audios are labeled with “electronic resource” after the title. If the call number says “Electronic Book,” follow the link at the bottom of the record (the chain icon) to read it online from your computer screen. If the call number says “Overdrive,” follow the link to our Overdrive downloadable audio page.
Light up the season at the library
We love a parade, and you will too. Cheer us on as we join in the seasonal festivities at the annual Downtown Parade of Lights Saturday, Dec. 6. We’ve been working hard on our entry which of course will have a library theme, but we won’t tell you what it’s going to be - you’ll see us in action. The parade steps off from the corner of Higgins Avenue and Fourth Street at 6 p.m., traveling across the bridge to Circle Square near the X’s where they’ll light the downtown Christmas tree.
As if that’s not enough fun, all sorts of seasonal activities will take place Saturday afternoon, including the library’s special “lights” story time at 1 p.m. and make-n-take craft project for kids. And while you’re enjoying yourselves downtown, be sure to take a gander at the library’s storefront window on Main Street showing off our Winter Story Wonderland display.
Renew from home
’Tis the season to be busy. Remember those books you checked out a few weeks back when the holiday season seemed far away? There’s an easy way to renew without making time for another stop at the library. Just visit our home page at www.missoulapubliclibrary.org and click on Catalog. Under “My Library Account” you can see what you have checked out, renew materials, place or cancel holds, even delay your holds so they don’t come in when you’re out of town. And, if you’re signed up for e-mail notification, we’ll send you a note when your materials are almost due. So even you last-minute procrastinators can keep in good standing at the library. And being good is what this season is about.
We have it: Staff reviews
“Bear Snores On,” by Karma Wilson, Illustrations by Jane Chapman. Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2002, find it at: E WILSON
Introduce young children to animals that hibernate with “Bear Snores On.” It’s a fun rhyming book for ages 3-8 about uninvited guests who host a party in Bear’s cave on a cold winter’s night. Because he is hibernating, Bear remains oblivious as several animals seek refuge in his cave from the blowing snow and frigid temperatures. The author who grew up in Northern Idaho demonstrates how well she knows her audience: when Bear wakes up, he only bemoans the fact that he slept through all the fun.
The warm, soft tones of the illustrations by artist Jane Chapman perfectly depict the coziness of Bear’s lair and capture all the ensuing activity.
This was Wilson’s first book and she has gone on to write more than 30 titles. If Bear becomes a favorite, other titles about Bear include: “Bear Feels Sick,” “Bear’s New Friend,” “Bear Stays Up for Christmas,” “Bear Wants More” and “Bear Feels Scared.”
