A Stevensville man paid more than $10,000 in restitution and fines after pleading guilty to charges he illegally purchased a resident’s hunting license and shot a trophy whitetail buck.

Nate Blaine recently pleaded guilty in Missoula County Justice Court to unlawful possession of a trophy deer and several counts of illegally obtaining a resident’s license, said J.D. Douglas, a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks investigator.

Blaine killed the trophy whitetail deer in the Whitefish area in September with a bow, Douglas said.

The 5-by-5 buck measured 151, which was enough to earn a place in the Pope and Young Club.

“It was a nice deer,” Douglas said.

Blaine paid $8,000 in restitution for the deer and $2,325 in fines. He also lost hunting privileges for 24 months in Montana and about 30 cooperating states.

Douglas said the man purchased licenses illegally in Montana and other states as well. He also purchased a duplicate license in Montana while still in possession of his original license.

The deer was confiscated at a Missoula taxidermy shop.

Blaine also forfeited an antelope and bull elk he shot this year in Montana, Douglas said.
