Holiday magic - Fourth-grade students at St. Joseph School express what makes Christmas special through writing, art

The magical Christmas Day.
LILI HARDY
St. Joseph School’s fourth-grade students in Sharon Madsen’s and Kelly Garrett’s classes wrote poems or paragraphs about what was special or magical about Christmas to them. They used the entire writing process (brainstorming, drafting, editing) to create these examples of holiday poetry. When their poems or paragraphs were completed, they took them to art class where the teacher, Tiffany Miller, helped them create original artwork. Students sketched their drawings with pencil and chose their favorite medium to color their designs.

What I Like About Christmas

It’s Christmas Eve and I can’t sleep.

I am so excited so I try to count sheep.

But it did not help so I left my room.

But then I realized that Santa would be here soon.

I wait and wait but there is no sign.

I fell asleep and woke up in the morning.

I saw 18 presents 5 of them were mine.

I hear a “ho ho” and knew it was Santa.

I threw him a letter and it said.

Thank you!

PETER MITZEL

Christmas Is Magic Because ...

Blow out the wick, let’s go to bed.

It’s Christmas Eve like the Bible said.

On that night three wise men came,

None of them were seeking fame.

And what these three kings came to see

Was the Savior born for you and me.

Many sheep, a horse, a cow,

The people too went to kneel and bow.

Mary and Joseph welcomed each,

To meet the One who would someday teach.

The world soon would learn to love

With help from God up above.

JOHN ELLINGHOUSE

Christmas

Christmas is magic because

Santa goes around the world

each and every year,

People know that he is very near.

Reindeer land on the roof,

You can hear each little hoof.

You try to sleep and not let out a peep,

Then finally morning comes and you

run down the stairs and see what the

big guy has left for you there.

JILL MADSEN

Christmas is the Best

To have fun with your family.

To have fun with friends.

Putting up the Christmas tree.

Doing the decorations.

Waiting for Santa.

Going snowboarding.

Have a snowball fight

with your friends.

Sledding with your friends

and family and waiting

for the coming of Jesus.

What Christmas Is All About

Christmas Day is filled with love,

coming from our God above.

Who sent us Jesus on this day,

born in a manger filled with hay.

Decorating the Christmas tree,

makes my spirit feel so free.

Families gather all around,

to wait his coming on this

earthly ground.

Christmas day is full of joy,

for all the good little girls and boys.

LUKE MOHORCICH

Christmas

It’s Christmas time,

People like to have a rhyme,

People watch Santa fly right by,

When you watch him he’s in the sky.

The true meaning of Christmas is Jesus,

He never will leave us,

Jingle, jingle there they come,

Reindeer come so cold they are numb!

TOMMY SELLMAN

Christmas

The tree in my room is very nice

Decorations, candles,

snow globes and lights.

Christmas Eve is quite a night

With gag gifts, food and

Santa’s all night flight.

Morning comes early,

I can’t sleep anymore

I race to the tree and

there are presents galore.

I especially like the presents

he leaves under the tree

I can’t wait to find out

how many are for me.

Candy canes, presents

and chocolates are great,

But most important is my family

and they really rate.

Jesus’ birth comes once a year

I am thankful for his love,

his hope, his cheer.
