Juneau released the names of five more staff members to join the four officials whose appointments she announced earlier in the week. Juneau, who won election to the state school superintendent's post in November, takes over Jan. 5.
She is retaining Judy Snow as state assessment director, a job she has held for seven years. Her annual salary will be $66,000.
“Her work with assessment contracts, the implementation of the statewide test and ensuring student confidentiality will ensure we create educationally sound assessment policy,” Juneau said.
Juneau appointed Joyce Silverthorne as P-20 policy adviser at a salary of $65,000 a year.
Silverthorne formerly was director of the tribal Education Department for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes of the Flathead Reservation. She served as a gubernatorial appointee to the Montana Board of Public Education for 10 years.
She has master's degree in education from the University of Montana and has completed doctorate coursework from Gonzaga University.
“Joyce has an established record of working with many different organizations to bring about needed change,” Juneau said.

Before joining OPI, he was executive director of the Montana Quality Education Coalition and taught at Montana State University.
He has a doctorate in school administration from UM and a master's degree in science education from Michigan State University.
“Pete's many years of leadership to public education will enable us to develop inventive solutions for school improvement,” Juneau said.
Juneau appointed Thea Van Nice as her executive assistant at a salary of $45,000 a year.
Van Nice has held the same job for eight years under Attorney General Mike McGrath and, before that, for Superintendent of Public Instruction Nancy Keenan from 1989-2000.
