Toxic tank to be removed from Lewistown hatchery
Posted on Jan. 7

LEWISTOWN (AP) - A buried concrete fish tank at the state's largest fish hatchery will be removed because its paint is contaminated with dangerous compounds called PCBs.

Officials with the state wildlife agency say the tank threatens the drinking water for Lewistown and could jeopardize a larger PCB cleanup project in the same area.

The tank is buried at the Big Springs Trout Hatchery near Big Spring.

Big Spring is the source of Big Spring Creek, which runs through Lewistown, and also the city's water supply. There's been no evidence that PCBs from the old fish tank have reached the water supply.

State officials are also worried contamination from the upstream tank could hinder a much larger PCB cleanup downstream.

An environmental assessment will be completed this spring, with cleanup likely to follow later in the year.
