Tall Breakers run past Seeley
By CHARLES PULLIAM of the Missoulian

Size was the difference Tuesday night at the Sister Rita Activity Center.

The Loyola Sacred Heart girls' basketball team towered over visiting Seeley-Swan and went on to double-up the Blackhawks 52-26 for a District 6-B victory.

With the win, Loyola stayed undefeated in league play at 5-0 and improved to 7-2 overall. Seeley-Swan fell to 1-3 in conference and 3-4 overall.

The Breakers boast four players who hover around the 6-foot mark and are anchored in the middle by 6-foot-1 center Christina Medeiros.

“Seeley is one of those teams that doesn't have a lot of size and tonight we took advantage of that,” Breakers coach Randy Stobb said.

The size helped Loyola outscore the Blackhawks 28-10 in the paint and hold a 26-18 rebounding advantage.

“They can stand there and look over everyone of us and throw a pass where they want and that makes it hard to defend for us,” Seeley-Swan coach Shawn Holmes said.

Holmes said his post players did alright, led by 5-foot-8 forward Bobby Pierson, but the task of trying to contain Loyola's Jordan Pfau made it a pretty difficult night for the Blackhawks.

Pfau used her teammates like Medeiros to free herself up on the outside. She went on to lead all scorers with 13 points, knocking down 3-of-4 of her 3-point attempts.

In the past two games she's shot a combined 5-for-7 from behind the arc. Stobb said that percentage is fine with him.

“If it's within our system, I don't mind her taking those shots at all,” he said. “She has the confidence to step up and hit those and that gives us a big boost.”

Against Seeley-Swan, Pfau hit back-to-back treys to start the second quarter, separating the Breakers from the Blackhawks early.

She zeroed in on her first from the top of the key, and less than 40 seconds into the quarter, her second trey gave Loyola a 19-5 cushion.

“I'm thinking, I'm open, so I might as well shoot it,” Pfau said.

Simply put, but the 5-foot-9 junior did more than just look for her openings. She displayed an all-around performance as well, collecting five rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Pfau said she wants to get to the foul line more, though, which could mean trouble for opponents if she drives more consistently.

“I just want to get to the free-throw line more, but we'll see,” she said. “I'm happy with how things are going.”

Led by Pfau, the Breakers took a 29-12 lead into halftime, shooting 54 percent from the floor in the second.

The Loyola bigs continued to cause havoc for Seeley-Swan in the second half, pushing the Blackhawks' offense well beyond the 3-point arc and forcing 11 turnovers in the final 16 minutes.

Seeley-Swan finished the game shooting 28 percent from the field.

“We had some open looks, but just couldn't get any to fall,” Holmes said. “I think we just needed to be a little more physical against them.”

Pierson led the Blackhawks with 10 points and Catalina Parcell grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Medeiros was forced to sit out because of an illness in Friday's 61-39 win over Thompson Falls, but the deep Loyola bench made up for her absence.

On Tuesday, Medeiros had her way inside, shooting 5-for-10 from the field for 12 points. She also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go with a pair of blocks.

Medeiros ended the third quarter with a big block on the Blackhawks' Anna Wood with under 30 seconds to play. She followed it up with a short jumper in the lane to end the quarter with the Breakers on top 42-20, their biggest lead up to that point.

“Christina is a presence down low,” Pfau said of her teammate. “It wasn't much fun without her Friday, so tonight everything just felt much more natural.”

The Breakers have a few days off to prepare for a road trip to Whitehall on Saturday, while Seeley-Swan faces Arlee Friday.

“We'll see how we compare against someone from on the other side of the state now,” Stobb said.
