Children’s Services

Pediatricians specialize in the treatment of infants, children and teenagers. Their training equips them to handle all of a child’s health care needs, including growth and development, detecting and treating illness, nutrition, immunizations, injuries and physical fitness. The American Academy of Pediatrics urges you to call your pediatrician immediately if your child has any of the following symptoms: bleeding that won’t stop; poisoning; seizures; difficulty breathing; high fever; head injury with loss of consciousness, vomiting or poor skin color; blood in the urine; bloody diarrhea or diarrhea that won’t go away; sudden lack of energy or loss of mobility.

The Caring Program for Children is a health coverage program that provides basic preventive medical, dental, and vision services to children at no charge to their families. Qualifying families must be at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. For example, a family of four earning $36,800 or less would qualify.

Assists eligible families with medical costs that arise from treating children with special health care needs including, but not limited to: heart conditions, cleft lip, seizures, asthma, diabetes, and concerns with child’s development. Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP)

CHIP is a free or low-cost health insurance plan that provides coverage to eligible Montana children until age 19. Financial eligibility is based on a family’s adjusted gross income. Your family doesn’t need to be low income to qualify for low-cost or no-cost children’s health insurance. There are no monthly premiums or enrollment fees and no limitations on pre-existing conditions. There are no asset or resource tests. Parents are in charge of the health care their children receive, and are partners with the state and federal governments in providing health insurance coverage for their children. Some parents share in the cost of their children’s health by making co-payment for each service used. Applications are available in all Montana communities, at county health departments, health care facilities, WIC offices, Head Start facilities, Indian Health Services, and many more community locations. Applications are available by mail by calling 1-877-543-7669 (toll-free) and can be mailed back when completed.

A private, non-profit organization providing services to families with children with developmental disabilities or who are at risk for developmental delay. CDC has provided early intervention services in Western Montana for 27 years, and offers 3 Certified Behavior Specialists, 25 Family Education and Support Specialists, leading-edge home-based teaching strategies, functional assessments, person-centered planning, program development and implementation, assistance with transitions into school and adult services, child education, parent education, resource and support coordination, drop-off respite services, and evaluation and diagnosis.

Childhood immunizations are available at the department on Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m., Wed 10-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m. The minimal administration fee is charged on an income-based sliding scale and can be waived if payment is a concern.

A private, non-profit organization providing a variety of treatment programs dedicated to children suffering from moderate to severe emotional disturbances. Intermountain offers highly integrated therapeutic and educational services for children ages 4-12. Intermountain Children’s Home and Services is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO), and is licensed by the State of Montana as a Mental Health Center. Located in Helena, Intermountain has responded to the special needs of Montana children since 1909.

A non-profit specialty children’s hospital serving children and families throughout the State of Montana in its departments of Medical Genetics and Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services. The Medical Genetics Program offers comprehensive services to individuals with genetic conditions or concerns about their risk to transmit or develop a genetic disorder. Shodair’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatric program affords treatment to emotionally disturbed children through the age of 18. Staffed by psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, nurses and other mental health staff, this program provides the most advanced psychiatric care available for emotionally ill, abused and neglected children in the state.

The CO-TEACH Preschool is an inclusive program for children ages 3-5 with diverse abilities. The mission of the program is to offer all children a stimulating, playful, first school experience and to provide them with the skills they need to achieve - now, whenever they transition to kindergarten, and the years to follow. Moreover, CO-TEACH operates on the belief that all children and families have individual strengths and needs and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity in a safe school environment. Family Resource Centers are located in many Missoula schools and in other schools throughout Western Montana. They are a welcoming, friendly place for parents to get helpful information and find ways to connect with other parents, the school, and the community. Neighborhood Nurse Program- Home visits and telephone consultations are conducted by a staff of community health nurses and social workers, upon request or through referral, for health and parenting information or issues. The primary focus is support for new parents and families of children with special health care needs. Visits can include sharing information on a variety of topics: for example, newborn infant care, breastfeeding, child development milestones and behaviors or community health and social resources. There may also be time to provide emotional support and encouragement to a concerned parent.

Provides a childcare referral service to help parents find a licensed and registered daycare provider to care for their child. CCR will also provide parents with consumer information about childcare and counseling about options in childcare settings. CCR also administers the Childcare Development Fund, which helps low-income mothers pay for childcare.

A support and advocacy organization for parents of kids with mental health issues. Sponsors a weekly support group that meets Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 pm at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church on 2512 Sunset Lane. There is no charge for this parent-led peer support group. Childcare is available at no cost, although reservations are needed for childcare. The group hopes to develop a peer mentoring service for parents and an advocacy group to address political issues pertaining to our families.

Full range of medical rehabilitation services on an inpatient, outpatient, day treatment or clinic basis for adults and children. Shodair Hospital is a non-profit specialty children’s hospital serving children and families throughout the State of Montana in its departments of Medical Genetics and Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services. The Medical Genetics Program offers comprehensive services to individuals with genetic conditions or concerns about their risk to transmit or develop a genetic disorder. Shodair’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatric program affords treatment to emotionally disturbed children through the age of 18. Staffed by psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, nurses and other mental health staff, this program provides the most advanced psychiatric care available for emotionally ill, abused and neglected children in the state.
