Fighting fire with fire on Blue Mountain: Strategy designed to keep smoke from billowing into Missoula during the summer
The grass is always greener under the prescribed burn.May's intentional fires on Blue Mountain have already revegetated slopes above the motorcycle trailhead and cleared out tons of scrawny deadfall. But for Missoula Ranger District fire manager John Waverek, it's the tons of slash that didn't go up in smoke that he counts as success.
Forest treatment efforts since the mid-1990s on Blue Mountain and Pattee Canyon have been turning overgrown forests into more open ponderosa pine stands. In the process, they've also reduced the potential for a wildfire to dump billows of smoke into Missoula's airshed.
