A St. Ignatius man faces felony charges for trying to have sex with a 14-year-old girl he contacted through a MySpace Internet conversation.

Jason Allen Sands, 32, was charged with two felony counts of sexual abuse of children, according to Missoula police Sgt. Bob Bouchee. He appeared in Missoula County Justice Court on Monday and was ordered held on $20,000 bail.

The "girl" turned out to be Missoula police Detective Chris Shermer. According to court documents, a Missoula woman told Shermer that a 15-year-old friend was receiving sex offers from a man she met on her MySpace page. The woman had started posing as a 14-year-old girl named Kayla to learn more about the man's identity.

Shermer took over Kayla's character and started exchanging text messages with the man, telling him Kayla was a 14-year-old student at Meadow Hill Middle School. The man responded, saying he wanted to have sex with Kayla and sending a picture of his penis to a Yahoo account Shermer had set up.

The court affidavit said Sands texted "Kayla" that he was coming to Missoula and wanted to meet her on Friday.

"Detective Shermer arranged to meet Sands at Meadow Hill School," the affidavit said. "He asked Sands to bring a kids' meal and an orange drink with him. Sands indicated he would also bring condoms and asked 'Kayla' not to wear any underwear."

Sands was arrested outside the school with a Burger King kids' meal and an orange drink in his pickup seat and a box of condoms in his pocket, according to the affidavit.

Bouchee said the investigation was part of the city's Internet Crimes Against Children program.

Sands' case will now be transferred to District Court, where felony cases are heard.
