Missoula County sheriff's deputies nab travelers with 20 pounds of pot in I-90 traffic stop

Two Washington men were arrested Sunday after Missoula County sheriff's deputies stopped their truck on Interstate 90 and found 20 pounds of marijuana packaged for sale.

Daniel E. Mesikepp, 29, and Abel Gonzalez-Fernandez, 22, were charged Tuesday in Missoula County Justice Court with criminal possession of dangerous drugs with the intent to distribute, a felony.

According to court records, the deputies made a routine traffic stop, but grew suspicious when the men offered different stories about why they were traveling in Missoula. They also appeared nervous, the records state, so the deputies called a police officer with a drug-sniffing dog.

When the dog alerted on a tool box in the bed of the truck, officers got a search warrant and found 20 one-pound bags of marijuana. They also found ledgers and other papers consistent with drug distribution, records state.

Both men remain jailed on $100,000 bail.
