TURAH - A pickup truck hit a patch of ice on Crystal Creek Road west of Turah Wednesday morning and crashed into the Clark Fork River, spilling some gasoline.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Chad Dever said the truck slid on a mixture of mud and ice about 1.4 miles west of Turah and rolled down an embankment into the river, landing on its side. The driver was not injured, and was able to climb out of the truck and call 9-1-1 just before his wet cell phone died.

Phil Martinsen, a battalion chief with Missoula Rural Fire, said firefighters put down booms to skim fuel off the water, but the spill was not significant.

"There was a little sheen on the water, but I'd be surprised if it was more than a couple of gallons of gasoline that spilled," he said.

"It was a standard runoff of fuel from a standard-sized pickup," Dever said.

Martinsen said the spill was entirely cleaned up and the booms were removed by late morning.
