RED LODGE - Wildlife officials believe they have killed a black bear that broke into a Red Lodge nature reserve and attacked a pair of mule deer.

Jeff Ewelt, director of the Beartooth Nature Center, says the bear entered the chain-link enclosure early Friday and attacked the deer. One of the deer, named Talitha, is believed to have died of a heart attack. Talitha's cage mate, Smiley, was able to escape but lost his antlers.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials say they believe they trapped the bear early Saturday as he was on his way back to finish off Smiley.

Friday's attack was the second this month at the wildlife exhibit. The center lost its oldest animal - 23-year-old Angel the Angora goat - on Oct. 2 when the same bear is thought to have dug a hole under a fence.

The center houses more than 60 animals that would otherwise not survive in the wilderness because of injuries or tameness.
