KALISPELL - A 66-year-old woman has been given a three-year deferred sentence for keeping about two dozen huskies in a feces-coated trailer and in her motor home in Evergreen.

Juanita McGranor entered an Alford plea in September to felony cruelty to animals, which means she does not admit guilt but believes she would be found guilty at trial.

McGranor, who used to live in Troy, was on her way from Washington state to Kentucky when she stopped at her son's Evergreen home June 20. Several days later, a neighbor called authorities to report possible animal abuse.

McGranor was arrested June 25 and was released on house arrest the next day after consenting to having the dogs spayed and neutered. She was ordered Thursday to pay more than $11,000 in restitution and do 100 hours of community service. The judge prohibited her from caring for or owning any animals during her probation.
