FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Matt Nichols threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Overbay with 3:30 remaining to lift Eastern Washington to a 49-45 win over Northern Arizona on Saturday.
The winning score culminated a five-play, 74-yard drive by the Eagles (8-3, 6-2 Big Sky), who kept hope alive for a berth in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. The 16-team field will be announced on Sunday.
The Lumberjacks (5-6, 4-4) threatened to respond, but their drive stalled when Michael Herrick's pass fell incomplete on fourth-and-3 from the EWU 32-yard line.
Nichols finished 22 of 33 for 408 yards and five touchdowns.
Herrick set a school single-game passing record, throwing for 574 yards. He added four touchdowns and two interceptions.

At Ogden, Utah, Cameron Higgins threw for 364 yards and four touchdowns to lead Weber State to a win over Cal Poly.
His most entertaining touchdown pass came in the fourth quarter as he fumbled the ball while scrambling, picked it up and hit Tim Toone for 44 yards. It was Toone's third touchdown catch of the day.
Trevyn Smith ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats (7-4).
Tony Smith hit David Mahr to give the Mustangs (4-7) an early 7-0 lead. But the Wildcats answered when Higgins threw a 15-yard TD pass to Bo Bolen.
Toone also caught a pair of second-quarter touchdown passes for WSU, and Mike Snoy had field goals of 30 and 19 yards.
The Mustangs' Smith, who threw for 166 yards, connected on a 12-yard TD toss to Jordan Youcom to pull Cal Poly to within 38-14 in the third quarter.

At Sacramento, Calif., with 20 seconds left to play, Sacramento State junior receiver Brandyn Reed caught a 12-yard touchdown pass to beat UC Davis.
Reed caught seven passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored on a 2-yard run for the Hornets (5-6).
Quarterback Greg Denham completed 29-of-38 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns for the UC Davis Aggies (6-5). Nick Aprile had two rushing touchdowns. Chris Carter caught nine passes for 84 yards and one touchdown. Bakari Grant caught a 49-yard touchdown for the Aggies.
After Grant's touchdown catch in the fourth quarter increased the Aggies' lead 28-17, the Hornets came back to cut the margin to three points on a 2-yard run by Jake Croxdale.
