LA GRANDE, Ore. - Eastern Oregon wasn't about to let itself be counted out of the postseason scheme.
Fighting for their playoff lives and hoping to finish the regular season with a win, the No. 22 Mountaineers put up one of the best offensive performances against Carroll College during head coach Mike Van Diest's 11-year tenure.
But it wasn't enough to beat the Saints.
Carroll quarterback Gary Wagner threw four touchdown passes, including three to Corey Peterson, and the No. 2 Saints outlasted the Mountaineers 48-43 Saturday at Community Stadium.
"With a team like Eastern Oregon, you expect a shootout," Wagner said. "Our defense played well today. They gave up just a couple of big plays, but other than that they played well.
"Offensively, we knew we would have to come out and win field position."
With the pressure on, Wagner produced. He completed 22 of 29 passes for 391 yards, rallying his team back three times before pulling away in the fourth quarter.
Eastern Oregon quarterback Chris Ware, meanwhile, finished 23 of 53 for 292 yards through the air, and had 10 carries for 107 yards.
While he was able to orchestrate back-to-back scoring drives in the fourth quarter, it wasn't enough to pull his team back on top.
"We ran out of time," said Mountaineers head coach Tim Camp. "We had a couple of missed opportunities; we ran by them and we didn't make the play."
No one took advantage of both team's mistakes more than the quarterbacks.
Wagner hit tight end Bubba Bartlett for a team-high 11 receptions and 123 yards. Meanwhile, Saturday was a day for Peterson, the junior receiver who returned after missing last week's 26-10 win over the UM-Western with the flu.
Peterson needed just four catches to rack up 132 yards and three touchdowns. His first came from 30 yards out on the first drive of the game. His next two both came on 47-yard passes and helped keep the Saints at a healthy enough lead in the second half.
Montana Tech 19, MSU-Northern 17: At Butte, Sean Kelly kicked a 29-yard field goal with 7 seconds remaining Saturday as Montana Tech pulled out a season-ending win over MSU-Northern at Alumni Coliseum.
The kick came 6 minutes, 11 seconds after Kelly missed the game-tying PAT following a 10-yard run by Skyler Knuchel, who ran for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
Knuchel, a Deer Lodge native, also scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter. Paul Klaboe fell on a fumble to set up Knuchel's second TD.
Hepled by a key holding penalty, the Orediggers forced the Lights three and out to get the ball back.
The game winning kick came after an 11-play 50-yard drive.
UM-Western 40, Rocky Mountain 33: At Billings, Rocky Mountain College was looking to ease some of the frustration and put a positive finish on a difficult football season, but it was UM-Western savoring a season-ending victory.
With sophomore quarterback Micah Mamiya running and gunning, the visiting Bulldogs outfought the Battlin' Bears in another Frontier Conference shootout on Herb Klindt Field.
Mamiya, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound sophomore, passed for 322 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for 66 yards in helping Western close out the year with a 4-6 record.
